Churchill 2
It follows on from its predecessor, Churchill I, and transforms a formerly neglected brownfield site into a local centre that brings together work, retail and public life. The project exploits the potential of the location by maximising the openness and permeability of the ground floor – a pedestrian shopping arcade leads directly into the building's inner atrium. This creates a strong connection between the building's interior and its surroundings.
Churchill II completes the edge of Winston Churchill Square, thereby reinforcing the local urban structure. The massing and façade of the building are divided into distinct segments and proportions that respond to the surrounding development, softening the scale of the building while maintaining a coherent architectural expression.
The brick cladding references the materials of the surrounding area and continues seamlessly into the interior, strengthening the building's relationship with its context. The consistent use of material, combined with the openness of the ground floor, blurs the boundary between interior and exterior, draws visitors inside and contributes to the animation of the ground floor and the adjacent public spaces.
